Swedish Tour

Dear guests!

We present the tour “My new Stockholm” or the so-called “Swedish Tour”, which is dedicated to the time of stay of the Swedish king Charles XII by Bender and in the village Varnita from 1709 to 1713.

Historical Background:
After defeat in the Battle of Poltava, Charles XII fled to the Ottoman Empire with the remnants of his army. Near the city of Bender he found a temporary shelter. His first camp was founded on the left bank of the river Dniester in 1709 and existed only a few days. The second camp was founded a little later on the right bank of the river Dniester, but in summer 1711 it was washed away by a flood. And finally, in his third camp, which Charles XII himself called “my new Stockholm,” he stayed until 1713. Hoping for revenge after the defeat by Poltava, Charles XII hab been staying for more than 3 years near Bendery and ruling Sweden from there. At that time, Zoom, Skype and other Internet programs were not available, so a courier needed more than three months to convey a Royal order or an instruction to Sweden. We invite you to take a fascinating journey through time and learn an interesting story about the stay of the Swedish King Charles XII near Bender.
